The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has recommended the names of Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
Bajrang Punia is the current number one wrestler after wining the Asian Wrestling Championships in Xi’an, China. Punia bagged the gold medal at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games by overcoming Kane Charig of Wales by Technical Superiority to clinch the gold in the 65-kg freestyle wrestling event at the Asian Games held in Jakarta by defeating the Japanese wrestler Takatani Diachi 11-8.
Vinesh Phogat was the first Indian athlete to be nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards held in February 2019. She won gold in women’s freestyle 50-kg event by defeating Canada’s Jessica Macdonald at the 2018 Gold Coast CommonWealth Games and she created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold by beating Japan’s Yuki Irie in women’s 50-kg freestyle wrestling gold medal match at 2018 Asian Games.
