The country’s largest cigarette maker appointed its ITC Managing Director (MD) Sanjiv Puri as the new Chairman and Managing director of the company after the noted industry leader and erstwhile ITC Chairman YC Deveshwar (aged 72) passed away on Saturday 11th May 2019 morning after a brief illness. YC Deveshwar had stepped down from ITC’s executive role in 2017 but remained a non-executive chairman of the Company. He was ITC’s longest serving Chairman and Corporate head.
Later in 2017, ITC had split the role of the Executive Chairman between Chairman and Chief Executive Officer as part of succession planning in the company. Then Deveshwar mentored the executive management led by Sanjiv Puri.
Sanjiv Puri is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Kanpur, and Wharton School of Business.He joined the ITC in 1986. He handled various responsibilities, including as chief of FMCG business that comprises foods,cigarettes, personal care education,stationery, matches and agarbathies.
Mr Puri has also served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company since July 2016.
Since 2015 he was the director on the board of company.
He was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in February 2017, assuming independent charge of executive leadership of ITC.
