Punjab is being honoured by the WHO for its sustained and exemplary campaign against the use of tobacco.
The state has taken a series of measures to reduce the usage of tobacco in any form and launched a campaign to educate the masses on this health issue. Further, Punjab has taken tough measures against those who violated non-smoking norms in the state, a statement from the WHO said.
The WHO award will be presented on May 31, being observed as ‘World No Tobacco Day’.
Punjab health minister Surjit Kumar Jayani informed the state was the first to impose complete ban on sale of loose cigarettes.
