“I am extremely saddened to learn about the passing away of Tapan Raychaudhuri,” the president said in a condolence message to the noted historian’s wife Pratima.
“His sad demise leaves a void which is difficult to fill. He will however stay alive in the fond memories of his family, friends, colleagues, students and countless admirers in India and abroad,” the message said.
Raychaudhuri was one of India’s foremost economic and social historians, well known for his penetrating mind and deep insight into British Indian history, India’s economic history and the history of Bengal.
For his immense contribution towards the study of history, Raychaudhuri was honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
