Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate ‘Maitri Setu’ between India and Bangladesh on 9th March at 12 noon via video conferencing. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the Prime Minister will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several infrastructure projects during the event.
With the inauguration of the bridge, Tripura is set to become the ‘Gateway of North East’ with access to Chittagong Port of Bangladesh, which is just 80 Kms from Sabroom.
The ‘Maitri Setu’ has been built over the Feni river connecting Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. The construction of the 1.9 kilometre long bridge was taken up by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd at a project cost of Rs. 133 crore.
The Maitri Setu symbolises the growing bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. It is poised to herald a new chapter for trade and people to people movement between the two countries.
The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for setting up an Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sabroom. It will ease the movement of goods and passengers between the two countries and provide new market opportunities for products of North East states. The ICP is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 232 crore.
