In Asian Boxing Championships in Dubai, Olympic Games-bound Amit Panghal in 54-kg and Shiva Thapa in 64-kg have entered the finals.

Varinder Singh settled for bronze in the 60-kg category after losing his semi-final match, as did Vikas Krishan, who retired hurt in the first round of the 69-kg semis bout.

The Indian contingent is assured of at least six silver medals by virtue of its boxers having reached the finals, including four women.

Thapa entered the final after defeating defending champion Bakhodur Usmonov of Tajikistan 4-0. He will face Baatarsukh Chinzorig of Mongolia in the final.

Panghal scored a 5-0 win against Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov to enter the gold medal match of the 54-kg category.

He will take on the 2016 Rio Olympic champion Zoirov Shakhobidin of Uzbekistan in the final match on 31st May 2021.

Earlier, India woman boxer Sakshi Choudhary lost her spot in the 54-kg final after Kazakh Dina Zholaman, her opponent in the semi-finals, successfully challenged the 3-2 result.

After Sakshi’s exit, there are four Indian women boxers left in contention for the gold medal.

MC Mary Kom (51-kg), Lalbuatsaihi (64-kg), Pooja Rani (75-kg) and Anupama (plus-81 kg) are still in contention for the gold medal.

Six-time world champion MC Marykom defeated Mongolia’s Latsaikhan Altantsetseg 4-1. The 38-year-old Marykom will face Kazakhstan’s Nazym Kyzaibay in the final.

Nazym, a two-time world champion, had an easy semi-final encounter against Sri Lanka’s Nadeeka Pushpakumari.
