New radiation therapy doesn’t lower IQ’

Assuring the brain tumour patients about the safety of the new radiation therapy, Tata Memorial Centre’s doctors have said that therapy system will be followed.
Addressing a group of patients in a conference the Tata Memorial Centre’s doctors, led by neuro radiation specialist Dr Rakesh Jalali said, ‘Our research can now act as a template for testing other high precision radiation techniques such as proton therapy, which will shortly be introduced in India Many of these patients, especially children, are cured, but they may have long-term disabilities’.
The study which was based on the side-effects that the research was started in 2001. Around 200 patients in the three to 25 age group were enrolled for the study and divided into two groups; one received conventional radiation while the other received stereotactic radiation. The patients had benign or low grade brain tumours and underwent treatment in Tata Memorial Hospital between 2001-2011.
