State-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai launched Vela, the fourth of Indian Navy’s Scorpene class submarine on Monday. The submarine will be commissioned in the defence fleet, after undergoing a number of tests by the Indian Navy, an official said.
The Submarine is a part of Indian Navy’s Project 75.
It is the fourth submarine launched by defence public sector undertaking (PSU)MDL after entering into a contract for construction and transfer of technology contract with French defence major Ms Naval Group ( formerly known as DCNS).
Submarine INS Vela was first commissioned on August 31,1973 in the Indian Naval Service and was decommissioned on June 25,2010 after serving for 37 years, MDL said in a statement
