First census on Indus Dolphins begins in Punjab

The Punjab Government joined hands with the WWF and began the census of the Indus Dolphin found in the Indus River.

The main objective of this census is to find out the exact population of this species of dolphins. After this, their protection program will be run. This is India’s first organized Dolphin Census, which will be completed within a span of five years. Before that very few dolphins were marked. The Forest and Wildlife Conservation Department of Punjab Government and WWF-India will complete this work together. Under this, dolphin census will be made by creating two teams.
The species of Indus Dolphin is found mainly in India and Pakistan. The dolphin population in this region is estimated to be over 1800. In India there is a very small number of dolphins of this species which is found only in Beas river.
