Mass evacuations of more than I million people has been done in low lying areas in 15 districts of Odisha as the extremely strong cyclonic Fani has made landfall near Odisha’s Puri.
The severe cyclonic storm with the speed of 90 -100kmph gusting to 115 kmph is likely to affect Odisha’s coastal districts Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Balasore. In West Bengal, it will affect the East and West Medinipur, South- and North-24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Jhargram as well as Kolkata districts.
Flight operations from Biju Patniak International Airport in Bhubaneswar were suspended from Thursday midnight.
As the severe cyclonic winds blowing up to 200 kilometres per hour and torrential rains approached Kolkata , flights here too has been suspended along with the shipping to the port by The Kolkata Post Trust. In Andhra Pradesh places like Srikakulam, Bizianagaram and Visakhapatnam are likely to be hit by the cyclone Fani. People have been cautioned to remain indoors by the Government.
Defence forces along with National Response Force (NDRF), Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) along with State Fire service personnel have been deployed in the coastal areas.
