Bajrang Punia handed India their first gold at Asian Games.

With 11-8 win over Daichi Takatani in the final of 65kg, this was Bajrang’s first gold at Asian Games. After taking an early 6-0 lead, Bajrang gave up six points. But then made the lead 10-8 before a failed Japan challenge gave him one more points. Pawan Kumar lost his bronze medal bout in 86kg category.
Bajran came into the Games after winning three tournaments — Commonwealth Games, Tbilisi Grand Prix and Yasar Dogu International — and carried on with his superlative show here. Such was his domination that the 24-year-old from Haryana won all his bouts, until the final, by technical superiority. He outclassed Uzbekistan’s Sirojiddin Khasanov (13-3), Tajikistan’s Fayziev Abdulqosim (12-2) and Mongolia’s N Batmagnai Batchuluu (10-0) to storm into the gold medal bout.
