The state of Andhra Pradesh is celebrating July 8 as Rythu Dinotsavam (Farmers’ Day) as it marks the birth anniversary of YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the 14th chief minister of Andhra Pradesh who served from 2004 to 2009. On the first day of his term in 2004, YSR Reddy provided free electricity to farmers in a campaign project. YSR was a four-time Member of Parliament and a five-time MLA from the Pulivendula constituency.

Andhra Pradesh government led by late YSR’s son Jagan Mohan Reddy issued a government order last year designating July 8 as the Farmer’s Day in the state. He held a state-level farmers conference at Jammalamadugu of Kadapa district last year on YSR Jayanthi. He distributed insurance certificates to farmers, launched a free crop insurance scheme, laid the foundation for the banana research centre in Pulivendula and launched the YSR Pension Scheme on the occasion of YSR’s birthday in 2019.

This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the celebrations will be low key. CM Jagan Mohan Reddy has recently launched the YSR Zero Interest Loan Scheme under which Rs 1,400 crore was credited to the bank accounts of 8.78 lakh Self Help Groups.

The thrust of our poverty alleviation programmes is on the uplift of the farmers.

Jonathan Gash, The Rich and the ProfaneQuoting Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of man.

George WashingtonQuoting A farmer is a magician who produces money from the mud.
