Ranjan Gogoi takes oath as the Chief Justice of India

Ranjan Gogoi was administered oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind today. Becoming the 46th Chief Justice of India, Gogoi succeeds Dipak Misra.

Born in Assam’s Dibrugarh, Gogoi is the first from North East India to be appointed Chief Justice of India. Gogoi has close to 23 years of experience practicing as a lawyer, and over 10 years of experience as a serving high court judge. He was appointed Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2011 before being sworn-in as a Supreme Court judge in 2012. He was one of the four judges to publicly air his grievances in an unprecedented press conference. He is also one of the few judges to have made public his assets and liabilities on the Supreme Court of India Website.
