India, Uganda sign four MoUs in various fields

India and Uganda signed four MoUs in the areas of defence cooperation, visa exemption for official and diplomatic passport holders, cultural exchange programme and material testing laboratory.
The agreements were inked following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala. The two leaders comprehensively reviewed all aspects of bilateral relations. India also announced two Lines of Credit worth nearly 200 million US dollars to Uganda in energy, infrastructure, agriculture and dairy sectors.
In a joint press briefing with the Ugandan President after the talks, Mr Modi said, India will continue to play a stable partner in the country’s journey towards development. India will also give vehicles, ambulances and cancer therapy machine to Uganda. He said, the two countries share historic and age-old ties which is close to India’s heart. Training, capacity building and infrastructure creation are core areas of cooperation between India and Uganda.
Speaking on the occasion, the Ugandan President said Mr Modi has changed India, ushering in progress in the country by promoting efficiency. He said, the two countries would work together in trade, investment and tourism sectors, supporting mutual prosperity through reciprocity. Mr Museveni thanked the Indian Prime Minister for offering to build a commemoration centre in Kampala in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Mr Modi reached Ugandan capital, Kampala this afternoon on the second leg of his three-African nations tour after concluding his Rwanda visit.
It is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over 20 years. The Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial reception at the State House. Mr Modi will also deliver the keynote address at the Ugandan Parliament, the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. He will also interact with members of the Indian community.
