Cabinet Reshuffle, Rathore given Information and Broadcast Ministry

Union government has announced a sudden cabinet reshuffle and gave Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal the additional charge of Union finance ministry.

He will hold the portfolio till Arun Jaitley recovers. Jaitley underwent a successful kidney transplant on Sunday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Besides this, Smirti Irani has been moved out of Ministry of Information and Broadcast and will now be responsible only for the textile ministry. Her portfolio has been given to Rajyavardhan Rathore who will be at the helm of the I&B ministry with independent charge. In 2014, Rathore was sworn-in as the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting.

Meanwhile, BJP national vice-president SS Ahluwalia has been made the new Minister of State for Electronics.

The cabinet reshuffle was announced through a press release issued from the office of President Ram Nath Kovind.

The following is the statement:

The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has directed the following reallocation of portfolios amongst the members of the Union Council of Ministers:

(i) During the period of the indisposition of Arun Jaitley, the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs held by him, be temporarily assigned to Piyush Goyal, in addition to his existing portfolios.

(ii) Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore be assigned the independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in place of Smriti Zubin Irani, presently Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

(iii) SS Ahluwalia, Minister of State be relieved of the charge of Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and assigned the portfolio of Ministry of State in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

(iv) Alphons Kannanthanam, Minister of State be relieved of the charge of Minister of State in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
